Teal Mini Swap, formerly known as Two for Teal Mug Rug Swap and Ovarian Cancer Research fundraiser, is a way for EvaPaige Quilt Designs to help raise awareness of this ridiculous disease annually during the months of July through September, which is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. The basic premise is formulated around the What We Know of All Quilters and Sewists Trifecta:
- They love to sew
- They like fun gifts in the mail
- They are mostly women and/or have women in their lives and would like to prevent women from dying from ovarian cancer if at all possible
Participants can choose to make either a mug rug (up to 10″ square) or a mini quilt (up to 18″ square). Partners will be matched according to their preference, ie, if you request a mug rug, you’ll be matched with someone who also is requesting a mug rug. Same for minis.
This swap has raised $4,470.00 for Ovarian Cancer Research.
My swap partner specified that she liked fish! So I started researching doing something with fish applique in a mini quilt, along with taking into consideration the teal fabric swatch I received as part of this project. The teal fabric is Scrollscapes II Aqua by Quilting Treasures.
I found a free stain glass pattern online for a fish, and I downloaded it and started thinking about colors and wrote them into the parts of the fish. I also found some small cutouts of different fish to use in the background. The background fish was where I was going to use the focus fabric. I also got inspiration for the water from a Life’s a Beach Art Quilt I did two years ago.
I looked through all my batiks and wanted to do a teal theme colored ocean and found colors to represent the water. I did the big fish in some batiks colors to help it stand out, and then I did some seaweed with batiks and thread painting. I made the background fish from the small fish cutouts and used the 2017 mini teal swap focus fabric as shown above. Following is the Teal Mini Quilt that I made for my Swap Partner.
